ChatGPT ads arrived in Europe on August 24. Here is why we think this is a BIG deal:
On August 24, OpenAI switched on ChatGPT ads in 31 European countries, Finland included, and they are already showing. Ads appear for users on the Free and Go tiers, booked through OpenAI’s ads team and partner agencies for now. Self-service already exists in the US; Europe gets it later this “summer” (cmon OpenAI, it’s like +10 here in Finland).
At Parvi, we think this is probably the biggest paid advertising opportunity of the past ten years. That is a big claim, so let me explain it.
”I have already run ads on the platform in the US market, and the results have been genuinely interesting, on both the B2B and the B2C side”
ChatGPT already owns a real share of how people search for products and services. And a conversation is a very different place to advertise than a results page. When someone asks a search engine for “crm for small business”, you get one intent signal. When someone spends twenty minutes talking through their company’s situation, what they have tried, and what they need next, that conversation carries more buying context than any keyword ever has. Being able to place your product into that selection process is worth a LOT.
I have already run ads on the platform in the US market, and the results have been genuinely interesting, on both the B2B and the B2C side. But my sample is small, so the public numbers are the ones worth your attention: across 94 ecommerce sites, ChatGPT traffic converted about 30% better than non-branded organic search, and B2B studies have measured AI-referred visitors converting at 4 to 5 times the rate of organic (in some industries)
The platform is still rough compared to Meta or Google Ads. The technical toolbox is thin: fewer controls, fewer formats, less measurement. Europe’s launch is also deliberately conservative it seems. At launch the ads are not personalized at all. Targeting draws on the topic of the current conversation, rough location, device, time of day and language. Past chats and memories are not used.
But the targeting logic is the compelling part, even in this early form. You are essentially targeting long-form prompts: the questions and situations your ideal customer describes when they are working out what to buy. That is a new skill, and it looks more like understanding your customer’s actual buying conversation than like bidding on keywords.
Which is also why I think the early-mover advantage here is real, especially in markets where AI adoption is slow. Ad platforms reward the people who learn them before the auction gets crowded. It happened on Google, then on Meta. This time the platform starts with restrictions, no self-service, and most advertisers waiting to see. The window is open exactly as long as that lasts.
What to do now, practically: find out whether your category shows up in ChatGPT conversations, map the prompts your buyers would actually write, and decide whether you want to be in the room when the auction is still quiet.
