Do ChatGPT ads affect ChatGPT organic traffic?
Advertisers say they do, and we’ve seen it too. Once their ChatGPT ads went live, several advertisers saw their organic ChatGPT traffic go up. In one of our client accounts, organic ChatGPT traffic rose almost 50% after we launched their ChatGPT ads. People are calling it the ChatGPT ads halo effect.
What advertisers are seeing
Advertisers running ChatGPT ads have been comparing notes, and the same pattern keeps coming up. Organic ChatGPT traffic goes up while the ads run. One advertiser shared on LinkedIn that their organic ChatGPT traffic jumped fivefold and dropped on the same day they paused the campaign (State of Brand).
The usual explanation: misattribution
When ChatGPT links to a website in an answer, it adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to the link. GA4 files that visit under chatgpt.com, and most people read that line as organic.
An ad click lands on your site from the same place. If the ad’s link carries no UTM tags of its own, GA4 can’t tell it apart from an organic citation, so it lands in the same bucket (paidsync.ai). Your “organic” ChatGPT line then moves with your ad spend.
A same-day drop on pause points that way. A real halo builds and fades over weeks, because it runs through people remembering your brand (getrefine.ai).
How a real halo effect works
Not through the answers. OpenAI says ads run on separate systems from the chat model, and advertisers can’t shape or rank its responses (OpenAI).
It works through how people behave. Someone sees your ad, doesn’t click, and a week later asks ChatGPT about your category or your brand by name. Now they click your organic citation. The ad did the work, and the visit is genuinely organic.
Other channels show the same kind of spillover. Across 17 Meta conversion-lift studies for 12 advertisers, people who saw Meta ads made 19% more search visits to the advertiser’s site, and 71% of those came through organic search (Brainlabs).
What we saw in one account
We run ChatGPT ads for a B2B client. In the seven weeks before launch, their site averaged about 11 organic ChatGPT sessions a week. In the first three weeks with ads, it averaged almost 16.

We checked the obvious explanation first. Every ad link carries its own UTM tags, so ad clicks arrive labelled as paid. And none of the organic visits started on the pages our ads point to, which a mislabelled ad click would have to. In this account, it isn’t mislabelled ad traffic.
It’s an early read with small numbers. But while the platform is still such a black box, it’s a signal worth following.
How to check your own account
- Tag every ad link with your own
utm_sourceandutm_medium. In Graphite’s testing, 92 to 96% of tagged ChatGPT ad clicks were recorded as paid sessions in GA4 (Graphite). Without tags, nothing else on this list can be read. - Compare landing pages. If your “organic” ChatGPT visits start on the pages your ads point to, they’re ad clicks.
- Compare with the same weeks last year, so a seasonal rise doesn’t get credited to the ads.
- Watch engaged visits as well as raw sessions. People who come looking for you stay a while.
- Read the pause. A same-day drop means tracking. A slow fade over weeks is the halo.
Tag first, then watch the halo
Tag your ad links, and the organic line becomes something you can read. If it still moves with your ads, you’re seeing the halo. If you’d rather have someone check your setup, our ChatGPT ads audit reads your tracking as part of it.
FAQ
What counts as organic ChatGPT traffic?
Visits from links inside ChatGPT’s own answers. ChatGPT tags those links with utm_source=chatgpt.com, so analytics shows them under chatgpt.com. Clicks on ChatGPT ads are paid traffic, but they only show up as paid when the ad link carries your own UTM tags.
Is ChatGPT getting ads?
It already has them. OpenAI began testing ads in the US in February 2026 (TechCrunch), and ads went live in 31 European countries on 24 August 2026, on the Free and Go tiers. They appear below ChatGPT’s answer and are labelled as ads.
